Geography

The Gram Panchayat is a fertile geographical region characterized by a predominantly flat terrain and coastal features. Several canals, streams, and wetlands, including the renowned Canoli Canal, are among the major geographical features of the Panchayat. The absence of hills and mountainous regions is another notable geographical characteristic of the area. A major portion of the Panchayat consists of low-lying paddy fields and wetlands locally classified as “Nilam.”

The predominant soil types found in the region are sandy clay soil and fine sandy soil. In particular, the western part of the Panchayat, which includes the coastal area, is characterized by predominantly sandy soil. Owing to its flat terrain and coastal nature, the Panchayat has favourable natural conditions for agriculture and various water-dependent activities.

Coconut and paddy are the major agricultural crops cultivated in the Panchayat. Azhikkal Lake is one of the major water resources of the Panchayat. In addition, small streams such as Thotteeri Thodu, Chemban Thodu, Manathala Thodu, Kaalad Thodu, Muttancheri Thodu, and Thottayi Thodu constitute important components of the region’s water resources and irrigation system. These water bodies not only provide water for agricultural purposes but also play a vital role in sustaining wetlands, conserving biodiversity, and maintaining ecological balance.

Thus, the presence of the Canoli Canal, Azhikkal Lake, numerous streams and wetlands, fertile low-lying agricultural lands, and coastal areas collectively contributes to the distinctive natural landscape and geographical character of the Panchayat.
